What is building science?
Building science is the study of how buildings perform and why they fail. This method is a holistic study that looks at interactions between and among the architecture, construction and building materials; the heating, cooling, ventilation and other energy using systems; the local climate and site conditions; and the occupancy, use, and maintenance practices.
In this field I specialize in building moisture control and sustainability, energy efficiency, the indoor air and environment, and comfort performance.
I work with clients to find the best solutions to make their buildings work better or best. I am objective and strive not to bring bias into my investigations, audits, designs reviews, and research projects. When asked for my opinion or recommendation, my common answer is: “It depends”. The answer depends on the observed and measured data; the code and regulatory requirements; available funding and implementation resources; and the client’s level of risk management.
I love my work–whether it is a single home inspection home or a long term high rise building project.
